Will you hold my hand?
Holding hands is as cliché as it can get.
Everyone holds hands, from friends to family and your significant others. Holding hands is such an everyday gesture that we often forget the significant role it can play in our lives.
A small everyday gesture can mean so much for so many people. But I think it takes a while to realize. Or maybe it hits you suddenly out of nowhere and you are left shocked with a simple act of holding hands.
Today as I was picked up by my SO, as his duty of my transportation, we held hands. We do it every day.
But today as the sunlight hit our hands, bouncing off our skins. Making my ring shine brighter than usual, glinting off in the sunlight I realized.
I realized how much his holding my hand meant to me.
His act of holding my hand gave me a sense of belonging, a sense of protection, a sense of love, a sense of ownership, and a sense of being connected.
It was at that moment I realized why it was so important for Pearl that Dimmesdale holds her hand out in public and when he does, that hand-holding becomes her savior.
As I held hands today I realized how much this act held me and my insides together. I could be falling apart inside but as soon as his hand slipped in mine a little bit of my world got fixed together.
That sense of warmth and connection that hand-holding provides can go a long way without any realization.
Someone could be craving for some distance and detachment. But even then, while maintaining your distance, if you just hold their hands.
I can assure you that the gesture will not be wasted. Holding hands has that calming effect.
I never realized it before today or maybe I did I just didn’t know I had to put it down in words.
And this makes me wonder, how I must have breezed through such small seemingly insignificant gestures every day without even knowing.
So, always hold hands and cherish the feeling it might bring you.
Cherish the small gesture from the people around you before they disappear into thin air one day.
